Few things resist easy definition the way that family does. Family is the only story you were written into before you could hold a pen. It’s a concept that stretches and contracts depending on who is speaking, who is listening, and what has passed between them. It can be inherited, fractured, and reimagined. So it’s really no wonder that when we asked for submissions on the subject of family, our contributors responded with work that sits with and weaves through that complexity.
There is something that happens when you return to a room full of people who share your blood or your history or your kitchen table. Something that cannot happen anywhere else. The past melting into present tense. You become, suddenly, every version of yourself there has ever been. The distance you’ve traveled, miles upon miles, years upon years, folds up quietly and slips away.
We hope you find something here that feels familiar in the best way. Not because these works mirror your own experiences, but because they remind you that the questions you carry are questions that every human, in every time and every place, has found themselves asking too.
You are here. They are here. Something called you back to the table.
Pull up a chair.
