You Came Back to Life as a Brown Bear
poetry • #10
By Luna Moore Latorre

I dream that you come back to life
as a brown bear.
I ask God to make me a bear
so we can live together.
As bears, we wander the forest,
you hand me raspberries
because you remember I don’t like blackberries.
We hunt salmon in the river,
my palms are too small to catch them,
so you scoop one up and give it to me.
We chew by the riverbank as
the sun bleeds across the horizon,
sunset an open wound the night sky
will sew up and bandage
just as I stay with you when you twist
your ankle tripping over a log.
In the dream, you still die before I do.
In the dream, I still hear you die.
I spend all night digging a hole by
your favorite quaking aspen tree.
I sit by your grave day after day, night after night,
I stop hunting, stop looking for berries,
my stomach growls but I no longer see
a point in eating
when you are not around
to share with.
